There's also Bloodborne, you literally fight Lovecraftian gods. There's 'insight' in that game, that mechanic literally means how aware you are of the illusion, of maya, the more insight you have the more you become aware of... literal giant spider creatures perching on buildings, you see what you're not supposed to see. Kinda like people being capable to see evil shapeshifters irl... Your purpose is to become a hunter and kill beasts until you wake up and realize that there are higher beings in control of the universe, you decide to evolve and kill these creatures with your arsenal and willpower. The most merciful thing the hunter does, is freeing his mentor from 'the dream', basically he's been held in captivity in a fake world for a long time by an archon/evil entity. This is the final battle since it's either you or him, who dies in battle wins by exiting the dream. The hunter kills his mentor in order to save him from his fate, therefore taking his place.
The game has been inspired a lot by H.P. Lovecraft, perhaps the best lovecraftian game ever, with its cosmic horror elements, actually... horror elements in general. There's also vampires who steal blood for power, in a sort of demiurgic way, one character that held so much blood, enough to give to an entire city (the blood queen), was literally imprisoned in the depths of said city as a blood bag...
I love that you mentioned Chrono Trigger. Definitely one of the best games ever made.
